Cultivar Profile

Picual Olive Tree

Olea europaea ‘Picual’

An early producer with high, constant yields. This rustic cultivar adapts to diverse environmental conditions with moderate cold tolerance.

Picual reacts well to regenerative pruning because of its capacity to sprout new growth. It’s an oil cultivar of a very high yield (23-28%). And its maturation is early (November-December). Picual is the favorite oil cultivar in Spain.

Water

Once established, water occasionally.

Water more frequently in extreme heat or containers. Newly planted olive trees will require more water to establish.

Soil

Well-drained, nutrient poor soil

Light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils all acceptable. Olive trees prefer well-drained soil and even grow well in nutritionally poor soil. Hot, rocky locations. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.

Care

Thrives in most average, slightly alkaline, well-drained soils, but it is highly adaptable. More productive when planted near another olive variety, such as Manzanilla, Uovo di Piccione or Gordal Sevillana. Hardy down to 15 degrees. Often takes 5-6 years to produce good crops. Water deeply, regularly during first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates drought. Shelter young plants from winter extremes.
